Understanding Basal Metabolic Rate

Everything you need to know about your body's energy consumption at rest

What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish basic life-sustaining tasks like breathing, circulation, cell production, and nutrient processing while at complete rest.

Factors Affecting BMR

BMR is influenced by age, gender, weight, height, muscle mass, and genetics. Men typically have higher BMR due to more muscle mass. BMR decreases with age as muscle mass declines.

BMR vs TDEE

BMR only accounts for calories burned at rest. Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) includes BMR plus calories burned through daily activities and exercise. TDEE is always higher than BMR.
