Description

Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease caused by Plasmodium parasites and transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. It remains one of the most common infectious diseases in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of Pakistan, especially during and after the rainy season. Once an infected mosquito bites a person, the parasites enter the bloodstream and travel to the liver, where they multiply before infecting red blood cells. This cycle leads to recurring episodes of fever and other symptoms that can become severe if not treated promptly.

There are several species of Plasmodium parasites, but the most common are Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. P. falciparum is the most dangerous because it can rapidly lead to severe complications such as cerebral malaria, kidney failure, severe anemia, respiratory distress, and even death. P. vivax is generally less severe but has the ability to remain dormant in the liver and cause repeated infections months or even years later.

Malaria symptoms usually appear 7 to 30 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito, although the incubation period may vary depending on the parasite species. Early diagnosis is extremely important because prompt treatment can prevent life-threatening complications. Doctors usually diagnose malaria using blood tests that detect the parasite in the bloodstream.

Treatment depends on the type of parasite, the severity of the illness, and the patient's overall health. Modern antimalarial medications are highly effective when started early. In severe cases, hospitalization and intravenous medications may be necessary. Public health measures such as mosquito control, early diagnosis, community awareness, and preventive strategies have significantly reduced malaria cases in many regions. By taking proper precautions against mosquito bites and seeking immediate medical attention when symptoms develop, malaria can be effectively treated and its complications largely prevented.

Causes

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are transmitted through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. The disease is not spread through casual contact such as touching or sharing food. In rare cases, malaria can also spread through contaminated blood transfusions, organ transplants, shared needles, or from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy or childbirth. Living in areas with poor mosquito control, stagnant water, warm climates, and limited access to healthcare increases the risk of malaria transmission.

Symptoms

The symptoms of malaria often begin with high fever, chills, and excessive sweating, usually occurring in repeated cycles. Other common symptoms include headache, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and weakness. Some patients may also experience diarrhea or cough. In severe malaria, symptoms may include confusion, seizures, difficulty breathing, jaundice, severe anemia, kidney failure, low blood pressure, and loss of consciousness. These symptoms require urgent medical treatment, as severe malaria can rapidly become fatal if left untreated.

Prevention

Malaria can be prevented by avoiding mosquito bites and reducing mosquito breeding sites. Sleeping under insecticide-treated mosquito nets, using mosquito repellents, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and installing window and door screens can significantly reduce the risk of infection. Removing stagnant water from around homes prevents mosquitoes from breeding. Travelers visiting malaria-endemic areas may be advised to take preventive antimalarial medication before, during, and after travel. Community mosquito control programs, early diagnosis, and prompt treatment of infected individuals also play an important role in preventing the spread of malaria.
