A Thyroid Function Test (TFT) is a group of blood tests used to evaluate the function and health of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck that produces hormones responsible for controlling the body's metabolism, energy production, temperature regulation, heart rate, and overall growth and development. When the thyroid produces too much or too little hormone, it can affect many systems of the body.
The main components of a Thyroid Function Test include Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), Free T4 (Thyroxine), and sometimes Free T3 (Triiodothyronine). TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and controls thyroid hormone production. Abnormal levels of these hormones can indicate conditions such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), thyroid inflammation, thyroid nodules, and autoimmune thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto’s disease and Graves’ disease.
Doctors commonly recommend TFT when patients experience symptoms such as unexplained weight gain or weight loss, fatigue, weakness, hair loss, irregular heartbeat, anxiety, depression, sensitivity to cold or heat, changes in appetite, menstrual irregularities, or difficulty sleeping. The test is also used to monitor patients who are already taking thyroid medications such as Levothyroxine.
The procedure involves collecting a small blood sample from a vein in the arm. No major preparation is usually required, although patients should inform their doctor about thyroid medications and supplements before testing. Regular monitoring helps doctors adjust treatment doses and maintain normal thyroid hormone levels.
Early detection of thyroid problems through TFT can prevent complications affecting the heart, bones, metabolism, fertility, and overall quality of life. It is considered one of the most important diagnostic tests for evaluating thyroid-related health problems.
The Thyroid Function Test is performed to diagnose thyroid disorders, evaluate thyroid hormone levels, detect hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, monitor thyroid medication effectiveness, assess thyroid gland activity, investigate symptoms related to abnormal metabolism, and monitor thyroid health during pregnancy or chronic illness.
No special preparation is usually required for a Thyroid Function Test. Patients can normally eat and drink before the test. It is important to inform the healthcare provider about thyroid medicines, supplements containing biotin, or other medications, as some substances may affect test results.
