Description

Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that contains the active ingredient Esomeprazole. It is commonly prescribed to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach and is widely used to treat conditions caused by excessive stomach acid. By blocking the proton pumps in the stomach lining, Nexium decreases acid production, allowing ulcers and damaged tissues in the stomach and esophagus to heal while providing long-lasting relief from symptoms.

Doctors commonly prescribe Nexium for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, acid reflux, erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastritis. It is also used in combination with antibiotics to help eradicate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, which is a common cause of peptic ulcers. In addition, Nexium may be prescribed to prevent stomach ulcers in patients who need long-term treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Nexium is available in delayed-release capsules, tablets, oral granules, and intravenous injection. It is generally taken before meals, preferably in the morning, for maximum effectiveness. Most patients begin to notice improvement within a few days, although complete healing of ulcers or esophageal inflammation may take several weeks.

While Nexium is considered safe for most patients, prolonged use should only be under medical supervision because long-term treatment may increase the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium levels, bone fractures, kidney problems, and certain intestinal infections. Patients should take the medicine exactly as prescribed and should not stop treatment without consulting their healthcare provider. When used appropriately, Nexium is highly effective in controlling stomach acid and improving digestive health.

Uses

Nexium is used to treat GERD (acid reflux), heartburn, peptic ulcers, duodenal ulcers, gastritis, erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and stomach ulcers caused by NSAID medications. It is also used together with antibiotics for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and to prevent the recurrence of stomach ulcers in high-risk patients.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Nexium include headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, bloating, dry mouth, dizziness, and flatulence. Long-term use may increase the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium levels, osteoporosis-related fractures, kidney inflammation, and intestinal infections such as Clostridioides difficile. Rare but serious allergic reactions, severe skin rashes, or persistent diarrhea require immediate medical attention.

Dosage

The dosage of Nexium depends on the condition being treated and the patient's age. Adults are commonly prescribed 20 mg or 40 mg once daily, usually taken 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. The duration of treatment may range from 2 to 8 weeks depending on the condition. Patients should swallow the tablet or capsule whole with water and follow their doctor's instructions carefully. Long-term use should only be continued under medical supervision.
